뇌졸중(cerebrovascular disease, 또는 stroke)은 바로 뇌혈관의 질환입니다. 따라서 뇌혈관 상태를 파악하는 것은 뇌졸중의 원인을 파악하는 데 매우 중요한 검사입니다.

이에는 뇌혈관의 구조를 알 수 있는 뇌혈관 조영술(cerebral angiogram, 또는 transfemoral cerebral angiogram, TFCA)과 자기공명 혈관조영술(magnetic resonance angiogram, MRA)이 있고, 초음파를 이용하여 혈류와 혈관 상태를 파악하는 경동맥 초음파(carotid Doppler, carotid duplex scan)와 경두개 초음파(transcranial Doppler, TCD) 등이 있습니다.

또한 뇌혈류량을 알 수 있는 검사로 단일광자 방출 전산촬영술(single photon emission computed tomography, SPECT)와 양전자 방출 단층촬영(positron emission tomogram, PET)이 있습니다.
